University Art Museum at Long Beach State is currently holding an exhibit in collaboration with the Center for the Study of Political Graphics (CSPG).The exhibit is now showing Peace Press Graphics 1967-1987: An Art in the pursuit of Social Change, known as a survey of press work and the connection to artists’ compilations in that specific time frame. The Center for the Study of Political Graphics is an LA based activist-artists discovery where it was brought about as a progressive political and social alternates that emerged between 1960-1990 by a printing press that also emerged during that time, known as the Peace Press. Since 1967 the CSPG has been holding and preserving posters and graphics all in relation to historical and contemporary movements for social change. CSPG in the works has set an artist commitment to the public as a means of giving them a visual approach to both past and recent social movements for they believe public collections of this material are rarely accessible to them.
The exhibition in collaboration with UAM will be held from September 10- December 11, 2011 at the University Art Museum having its hours on Tuesday-Sunday: from 12 to 5pm and Thursday: from 12 to 8pm. The exhibition is co-curated by UAM Associate Director Ilee Kaplan and the Executive Director of the CSPG Carol Wells. The exhibit is set to feature posters from the press' archive and private collections ranging from more than 50 posters. The collection of the posters will portray anti-war protests, feminism, worker’s rights, civil liberties and much more revolutionary marks made in the press. There will be works of artists such as Robert Crumb, Harry Fonseca, and Sheila Levrant de Brettville. Besides the collection, the UAM will be illustrating poetry, historical timelines, film clips and a film screening to really enhance the audience’s view of the pursuit of social change.
